Bartholomeus Klip Farmhouse

Bartholomeus Klip Farmhouse

Bartholomeus Klip Farmhouse is an exclusive destination in the Cape Winelands, located on a working farm and game reserve in the Riebeek Valley. Discerning travellers will appreciate the peace and quiet in the exclusive five-bedroomed farmhouse, while families with children can enjoy privacy in the Wild Olive House & Cottage.

An easy drive of just over an hour from Cape Town, our romantic and supremely comfortable farmhouse is set beneath a spectacular mountain range, and surrounded by well-kept farmland and a 10,000 acre nature reserve.

Rooms and Suites

There are four double rooms with bathrooms in the beautifully furnished farmhouse and one separate suite outside, with its own secluded verandah looking over the veld and up to the mountains. Finishes everywhere are luxurious and stylish, with crisp cotton bedding and elegant fabrics. Our own toiletries add a special touch to the Victorian-style bathrooms.

Wild Olive House, has proved very popular with groups of friends and families. Children of all ages are welcomed, and the house has its own garden, swimming pool, large shady verandah and outdoor facilities for braaing.

Cuisine and Wine

The restaurant at Bartholomeus Klip Farmhouse deserves special mention. Resident Chef Louise Gillett’s imaginative fusion of traditional South African and classic recipes, made mostly from a variety of local ingredients, produce an ongoing feast of delicacies, all day long, from breakfast over brunch and lunch to high tea and dinner.

Chef Gillett has honed her skills in some of the top restaurants in South Africa and the United Kingdom, and has published the award-winning "Life on a Cape Farm – Country Cooking at Its Best" (Struik) with twin sister Lesley in 2013.

A wonderfully capacious circular farm dam has been converted into an unusual salt-water swimming pool, complete with a wide wooden deck for sunbathing or enjoying sundowner drinks overlooking the nature reserve, where you may spot the quaggas grazing in the evening light as the setting sun turns the mountains pink behind them.

The gardens at Bartholomeus Klip Farmhouse flourish in the heat of the long summers. Flowerbeds, old oak trees and extensive lawns surround the house, with loungers enticingly set out under umbrellas on the grass, and benches in secluded places perfect for absorbing the relaxed atmosphere.

Activities Overview

Highlights of a stay at Bartholomeus Klip Farmhouse are the nature drives through the 10 000 acre nature reserve. Whatever time of day you go, you are sure to see plenty of life in the reserve whether it's a couple of bontebok, a lone secretary bird striding through the veld, or a herd of eland standing watchfully in the fynbos: and you will have the knowledge that you are driving through a uniquely-preserved piece of one of the world's smallest but richest floral kingdoms, the Cape Floristic Region.

A variety of activities available on the farm, all of which are offered with guidance from our rangers. Explore the 10 000 acre nature reserve by mountain bike, or take a gentle stroll through the fynbos. There is also the option of hiking in the mountains to enjoy the proteas and birdlife. Also on offer is fresh water fishing in the dam, where fish such as barbel, carp, small mouth bass and bluegill can be caught. Some activities must be organised in advance and we will be happy to make the arrangements for you.

Down at the dam guests can take to the water in canoes and kayaks, or go windsurfing, freshwater fishing or bird watching.

Children staying at Wild Olive House are always delighted to find themselves on the edge of the nature reserve, and fascinated by the farming activities. Bikes for children are available, but keen young cyclists may prefer to bring their own for the wonderful rides of varying difficulty through the farmlands or the reserve. The dam offers endless possibilities for swimming, windsurfing and boating, and Louise (the Chef) loves to arrange cooking classes specially geared for children.
